Summary

Jenny Han meets The Bachelorette in this effervescent romantic comedy about a teen Korean American adoptee who unwittingly finds herself at the center of a competition for her heart, as orchestrated by her overbearing, loving family。

Jasmine Yap’s life is great。 Well, it’s okay。 She’s about to move in with her long-time boyfriend, Paul, before starting a nursing program at community college—all of which she mostly wants。 But her stable world is turned upside down when she catches Paul cheating。 To her giant, overprotective family, Paul’s loss is their golden ticket to showing Jasmine that she deserves much more。 The only problem is, Jasmine refuses to meet anyone new。

But…what if the family set up a situation where she wouldn’t have to know? A secret Jasmine Project。

The plan is simple: use Jasmine’s graduation party as an opportunity for her to meet the most eligible teen bachelors in Orlando。 There’s no pressure for Jasmine to choose anyone, of course, but the family hopes their meticulously curated choices will show Jasmine how she should be treated。 And maybe one will win her heart。

But with the family fighting for their favorites, bachelors going rogue, and Paul wanting her back, the Jasmine Project may not end in love but total, heartbreaking disaster。

This YA Contemporary was adorable! Jasmine’s in a relationship with a less than stellar boyfriend。 Paul doesn’t treat her the greatest, but she doesn’t really see it because Jasmine has relatively low self-worth。 When Paul is caught cheating and wants a break so he can explore other options, she vows to wait until he’s ready to start up again。 If that doesn’t speak volumes about her character, nothing will。 In all their good intentions, her family wants her to explore what other options are out there。 They want her to see that sh Jasmine’s in a relationship with a less than stellar boyfriend。 Paul doesn’t treat her the greatest, but she doesn’t really see it because Jasmine has relatively low self-worth。 When Paul is caught cheating and wants a break so he can explore other options, she vows to wait until he’s ready to start up again。 If that doesn’t speak volumes about her character, nothing will。 In all their good intentions, her family wants her to explore what other options are out there。 They want her to see that she is a strong young woman and has so much to offer the world。 In a fun bachelorette style, this is how the story unfolds。This is a book that you want to hold tight to and not let go, long after you’ve finished reading。 I can’t wait to snag a physical copy once it’s released。 Poor Jasmine。 So many people are telling her how amazing she is, but she doesn’t see it。 She refuses to see it because they’re close to her。 Watching Jasmine come into herself is an absolute joy。 The Jasmine Project has a wonderful cast and a super fun storyline from start to finish。 I cannot count how many times I laughed out loud reading this。 Thank you, Simon and Schuster Children’s and Book Terminal Tours, for sending this along! 。。。more

Too often these stories don't center on adoptee experiences, but I loved that this was just part of Jasmine's life and she has a big family that loves her unconditionally。 - I just adored this。 This book felt like a big hug。 。。。more

Jasmine is shy and insecure, hiding her dreams and feelings deep inside for other people’s sakes。 As I said earlier, she is definitely an enneagram 6 because she craves safety and security in her life, so she stays inside her comfort zone at all times - but she is also an unhealthy type 6, due to her crappy, manipulative boyfriend, Paul, who uses her insecurities to keep her tied to him。 This insecurity is the foundation for the Jasmine Project, a competition that makes Jasmine a kind of secret bachelorette, the three bachelors being men her family has chosen for her; they have organized meet-cutes, chance meetings, and dates for Jasmine in order for her to see how she should be treated。 But what they don’t think about is how betrayed Jasmine might feel if she ever finds out, or how the idea of her summer of love being a “game” may invalidate her budding relationships for her。 And I felt all her emotions so deeply!! Since I’m an enneagram 6 as well ;)I didn’t mean for this review to become an analysis of her enneagram type, so all that to say I really related to her thought process and her reactions to the events of the book, so I learned a lot from her growth and the way she handled herself by the end of the book。 Naturally, out of the bachelorette competition comes romance!! I had my winner from the get-go, but I was surprised how obvious it became that she was falling in love with one specific bachelor, because it honestly barely mentions the other two?? I felt like the other two needed some more screen-time, but because they didn’t, it also emphasized that the point of the novel wasn’t the romance but the growth Jasmine needed - specifically, that she needed to discover her worth, how special she is to the people around her。 Still, there were so so so many sweet, romantic moments (not just with Jasmine hehe), which just made my heart sing!!! Overall, this book is full of heart-warming moments and lessons on what it means to believe in your unique impact on the world。 The format also keeps it interesting, often switching to texts from the family group chat or excerpts from their podcast talking about the behind-the-scenes of the competition。 I really liked it, and I recommend it to readers who like fluffy yet inspiring contemporary romances!(This review will be posted on Under the Covers Book Blog!)If you enjoyed this review, you can friend/follow me here on Goodreads or on Instagram and Pinterest @ashton_reads for more bookish content (@ashton。reads on TikTok)!! Or will the Jasmine Project crash and burn before she has a chance?Meredith Ireland’s debut is hilarious, heartwarming, and best of all, full of romantic and family-centric misadventures。 I loved everything about this fantastic book! Jasmine is a brilliant protagonist, and her gradual discovery of her own self-worth is simultaneously heartbreaking, inspirational, and oh-so-very real。 Each of the bachelors are fabulously fun and unique, and I had a hard time deciding which one Jasmine would fall for。 Of course, a review of The Jasmine Project would not be complete without mentioning Jasmine’s hysterically loving fifty-member-strong family, and that brings me to one of my absolute favorite parts of this book: the family group texts! Ireland’s creative inclusion of group texts to discuss how the Project is coming along—as well as podcast episodes, diary entries, and bookkeeping notes—really brought the story and the characters to life and added even more levity to this loveable tale。 Moral of the story? I thought it was a great combo in the book! The ending was well done and it was a very cute ending。 I enjoyed this rom-com story and am glad to have read it。 I was instantly hooked into the story from the beginning and couldn't stop until the end。 The only problem I had with this book was with the main character but other then that I think the author wrote such a wonderful story。 I recommend this book to fans of To All the Boy's I've Loved Before and 10 Blind Dates。 。。。more

While Jasmine’s massive extended family is all in on it, Jasmine herself has no idea。 This was sort of an odd idea from the get go。 Is it cute or overbearing that her family steps in in this way? It made the whole book a bit uncomfortable, being in on a secret that Jasmine would obviously be angry about if she knew。 The upside is that this isn’t really set up as a love triangle (love square?) as it’s pretty evident early on who Jasmine is interested in, and the others don’t pursue her too strongly。 Jasmine also learns about herself and her self worth throughout the story, which was part of her family’s intention。 While some of the secondary characters are one-dimensional, Jasmine goes through significant character growth over the course of the novel。My biggest struggle with this book was how long it took to get to the story。 I definitely wouldn’t have finished this one if I hadn’t been reading it for review - the first hundred or so pages really dragged, and I didn’t get truly interested until maybe 250 pages in。 It felt like a lot of the set up of this almost 400 page book could have been cut down; some parts felt repetitive or just boring。 Setting up the background - Jasmine’s attachment to her boyfriend, her lack of self confidence, the group texts between the family - could have taken a lot less time。 She didn’t start running into the boys until over 70 pages in。Without giving away any spoilers, the ending also felt a bit abrupt and unsatisfying。 It felt like there were two “good” endings to the book, but instead of committing to one, the ending landed in a weird space in the middle。 I can see what the author was going for, but it really didn’t work for me。Jasmine’s character growth and family relationships were easily the best part of the story, and were clearly intended to be more important than romantic relationships。 Maybe part of the problem here is the marketing。 The book is described as a romance and marketed as such。 The cover clearly points to that。 I was expecting a cute romantic story, and while that’s there, it really didn’t feel like the point。 Overall, this book wasn’t for me, but someone willing to spend more time with the character set up and who isn’t looking for a straightforward romance may enjoy it more。 2。5 stars, rounded up。Thanks to NetGalley and Simon & Schuster for the eARC。 。。。more

Secret matchmaking??After my recent bad book luck and one too many disappointing contemporary romances, I was cautiously optimistic heading into The Jasmine Project, and I was not disappointed。 It was every bit the light, fun read I was hoping for and so much more。 As advertised, The Jasmine Project is an “effervescent romantic comedy about a teen Korean American adoptee and her overbearing, loving family,” but when you look past the sweet romance and wacky family antics, you find a story about self-discovery and what Whitney Houston calls the greatest love of all。Came for the Romance, Stayed for the Coming-of-Age Story。The romance is a bit predictable (like as soon as she met bachelor #1, I figured out who was ending up with whom,) but in the words of Meredith Ireland, “cheese is honest” and, when done well, it’s fun。 I’m usually not a fan of the whole reverse harem, love square kind of thing, but it works in the context of the story。 Each love interest has his charm, and Ireland plays off familiar, beloved tropes to give us a great story。 There’s a reason we love sweet Boy Next Doors, and Super Attractive Jocks and well, I’m not sure exactly what category Eugene falls into, but we love him too。 The three bachelors give us good mix and are each endearing in their own way。 I wasn’t super invested in the romance(s)–maybe because my reader senses were tingling about how it’d all end–but I still thought it was cute and enjoyable。When you break it down, The Jasmine Project is less about who gets the girl and more about who the girl actually is。 Don’t get me wrong, if you’re here for a cute love story, you won’t be disappointed, but Jasmine’s growth as a character at the heart of the story。 This was great for me because, if given the choice, I’d choose a character-driven novel or a plot-centric one any day。 And Jasmine is such a great character! She’s self-deprecating and awkward and relatable and basically everything I love in a protagonist; you can’t help but want the best for her。 I have to say, Jasmine’s journey to self-discovery was painful to read initially, but didn’t we all have cringey, awkward growing pains in high school? Her complete lack of self-awareness actually had me worried I wouldn’t like her as a protagonist, but by the end, I was rooting for her even more than I was rooting for the Jasmine Project to work out。 And, you know, declaring Jasmine Yap was my spirit animal。Overused Elements in YA, Change My Mind。I’m not a huge fan on first person POV in YA because so many of them sound the same, but this is not the case with The Jasmine Project。 Jasmine has a strong voice that comes across the page so well。 She’s honest and self-deprecating, she overthinks everything and has a dry sense of humor, she feels genuinely relatable, and her inner monologue is hilarious。 This is how first person POV should be done, people!Another thing I’m not a huge fan of is epistolary-type interludes in my fiction, and there are quite a few with the crazy family group chat, podcast transcripts and field notes-type diary excerpts。 Maybe I just haven’t seen it done well, but I generally feel like random inserts don’t add anything to the story。 They tend to be awkwardly inserted and are usually break up the story unnecessarily。 Text threads especially have become my pet peeves。 I know realistically characters would message each other via technology, but I spend enough time on my phone, I don’t need to be reading fictional texts in a book too。 That being said, it’s a testament to Ireland’s skill as a writer that the sections featuring Davey’s Not Normal Family Group Text (aka David’s Unwieldy/Bickering/Gloating/Intolerable Group Text) were some of my favorites。 Speaking of…My Big Fat Greek Filipino/Italian Family。“In the Venn diagram of Southern, Filipino, and Italian they all intersect at: Baby, you need to eat more。” The Ventura/Yap family is the best。 First of all, I love the idea of a multi-ethnic gigantic adoptive family。 We obviously can’t get to know every one of the 50+ members of the family, but we’re able to get a strong sense of the personalities for the ones we do hear from。 It’s something as simple as a family group chat, but they each have such distinct voices, you can almost imagine the person behind the text。 (Spinoff featuring Davey’s Extremely Nosy Family, anyone?) The crazy family antics are hilarious, but behind all the chaos, you get to see a tight-knit family rally the troops to protect one of their own, and it's the cutest。 Jasmine’s family is a little weird (I mean, aren’t we all?) and kinda overbearing at times, but they’re ultimately so supportive。 The Jasmine Project is such an endearing and heartwarming story because of the family behind the actual Jasmine Project, and I love it。My Two Cents。Overall, I loved The Jasmine Project, but there are a few things I’d ideally change。 I devoured the book, and while I certainly enjoyed the story, I wish the story and characters were developed a little more。 I’m all for breezy summer reads, but Ireland gives us such a great cast of characters, I can’t help but wish she’d gone just a tad deeper。 Similarly, the plot and story are great, but it felt a little rushed to me。 There are definitely opportunities to expand on parts of the story and really make it a home run。 I also wasn’t a huge fan of the side story involving Jasmine’s strained relationship with her aunt。 It didn’t quite fit in with the rest of the story。 I’m not sure if it’s because it felt underdeveloped or because it wasn’t incorporated into the plot well, but either way, I wasn’t a fan。My biggest complaint is the ending。 Whether it’s because she’s trying to do the unexpected or because she really wants to hammer Jasmine’s character arc home, Ireland’s ending misses the mark for me。 I totally appreciate what she was trying to accomplish, but I feel like she couldn’t choose between one of two endings and tried giving us both without fully committing to either。 And it’s completely unnecessary。 From a storytelling perspective, it’s kind of an odd choice because I feel like they both ultimately get to the same place, so I don’t really see the point of rehashing it twice。 It gives the ending a start-stop kind of a jerky feel, and we end up finishing an otherwise a great story on a slightly disjointed note。All in all, The Jasmine Project is such a fun read and perfect for a summer day。 It’s cute and charming, light and heartwarming, and pretty much everything you could want from a YA contemporary romance。 I love the cute love story almost as much as I love Jasmine’s Big Fat Italian-Filipino Family and their chaotic group texts。 The Jasmine Project is a story about love in all its forms: romantic love, familial love, and self-love wrapped up in a slightly ridiculous premise, and it just works。 Oh, and the food! I didn’t even talk about the cooking aspect of the story, but it’s great。 So yeah。I received an early galley from Simon and Schuster Children’s and Book Terminal Tours, it did not impact my review。 All reactions/thoughts/gushing is 100% genuine and unbiased。 。。。more

The premise sounded so fun, and I’m all for family antics。 The Jasmine Project throws Jasmine into a Bachelorette-type situation where she is unknowingly set up with three different guys, which begins a great personal journey。Jasmine is content with her life…in a way。 What would she be upset about? Having a dedicated long-term boyfriend Paul who she’s about to move in with and going to college to become a nurse? Except that it turns out that Paul has been cheating on her and that she’s always wanted to be a professional chef, not a nurse。 To cheer her up, her family sets her up with three different guys, Eugene, Justin Michael, and Aaron in a Bachelorette-type situation, all without her knowledge。 From there, she begins to realize that she’s been complacent in a life that she never really wanted。I’ll be honest and say that the first third of the book was a bit rough to me, mostly because Paul was the absolute worst and it was difficult for me to get through Jasmine not realizing this。 However, this was intentional: she needed to realize that Paul was a factor in her life bringing her down, not lifting her up。 It was the start of her character growth, and I ended up really enjoying the second half of the book once this was more apparent。Jasmine is resigned to being a side character in everyone else’s lives。 She settles for Paul because she doesn’t think she deserves more, and she settles for becoming a nurse like her mom after her aunt’s restaurant failure。 She self-sabotages and looks down on herself, which Paul enables; over time and throughout the competition, she realizes that she’s allowed to want things for herself and that she deserves to be treated well。 I really enjoyed this character arc and found it very well done over the course of the story。The family dynamics were great as well。 Jasmine has a large extended family, with her mother’s Italian side and her father’s Filipino side。 They’re meddling and nosy but ultimately, they care so much for each other。 Jasmine’s sister Cari is the one who starts the Jasmine Project to help her get over Paul。 At first, I had some issues with this because they were pushing the romance aspect a little too much; however, I liked that Cari makes sure to emphasize that this project was mainly to help Jasmine realize her true potential。 She doesn’t have to end up with one of the guys; she just has to realize that she deserves better and can have better than Paul。The plot itself was pretty fun! In addition to Jasmine’s narrative, we also have the extended family’s group chat (her excluded, of course), as well as Cari’s podcast detailing the progress of the project。 I liked getting to see both sides of this。 You, as the reader, always know what is happening and can read between the lines while Jasmine remains oblivious。 It adds to the fun of the story in an unexpected way。We have three main love interests, excluding Paul: Aaron, a hot minor league baseball player; Justin Michael, Jasmine’s childhood best friend who’s back in town after five years away; and Eugene, the son of a famous chef who Jasmine instantly connects with。 The family sets up meet cutes as well as run-ins with Jasmine。 I won’t spoil who she ends up with, but I really liked reading all their scenes together。 Also, and this is a bit random, but I liked how awkward Jasmine is yet she still manages to connect with each guy。 There’s not always smooth dialogue but the scenes feel very genuine。The different backgrounds of Jasmine’s family and friends was really cool to read too。 She’s an adopted Korean American, and her brother is adopted and Laotian and Dominican。 Meanwhile, her dad is Filipino and her mom is Italian, which adds up to a large extended family on both sides。 Jasmine manages to combine all sides of her heritage, Korean and Filipino and Italian, in her cooking somehow。 Jasmine’s friends are Chinese-American and Black, and Eugene, one of the love interests, is Indian and white。The Jasmine Project was such a fun story with great character growth for the protagonist and a cute love story! I really liked the plot and the family dynamics too。 If you liked 10 Blind Dates by Ashley Elston, I think you’ll also enjoy The Jasmine Project!original review:ngl the first third was kinda tough to get through because paul was the absolute worst and it was irritating to read jasmine not realize that。。。but that was intentional because it gives you a starting point to seeing her character growth, which is to say that I ended up really enjoying the second half of the book! 。。。more

Though the characters are extremely loveable - Jasmine included - I found myself so frustrated with her behavior。 This is clearly the point, but I was almost horror film-style yelling at her to not do stuff on a regular basis。 Because she has so much growing to do and has a wonderful heart from the jump, she is an ideal m。c。 for the genre。 This is a strong debut from Ireland, and I am already looking forward to reading many more wonderful works from them。 This is an uncomplicated and nicely constructed YA novel with a relatable protagonist, and I think it'll be a hit with its target audience。 。。。more

I thought that was fine, since the story was more meant to focus on Jaz’s growth and her learning how people are supposed to treat her instead of her relationship status and who would end up winning in the end。 The writing was a little too simple for my taste—it sometimes felt like it was telling instead of showing, or making strange comparisons—and Paul sometimes turned a little too cartoonish, but I truly enjoyed this book。 It’s a solid 4 stars for me! 。。。more

I loved the big family parties in the story, and the family meddling and drama is on point, too。So Jaz is at a crossroads。 She’s graduating high school with plans on going to community college and follow in her mom’s footsteps to become a nurse。 Also, Jaz is supposed to move in with her high school boyfriend, Paul, until plans change and he gets caught cheating on her。 Jaz’s family, and I mean all of them, decides it’s time for her to start dating other guys – guys who would actually show Jaz she’s special。I could relate to Jaz on the family side of things and going after a dream that seems unattainable。 She wanted to stay safe and surrounded by family and I know that feeling because I grew up with so many people around me, it was sometimes scary to leave that。 But Jaz grows a lot from dating the other guys, having conflict with the family and resolving those issues。 By the end, she’s ready to spread her wings and fly。As for the dating show part of the story, yes she is dating these boys but she doesn’t know the whole story about how they came into her life。 Right off the first meetings I felt the sparks between her and Eugene! He was my choice for her all along for sure。 They have a love of food and cooking and he really brought her out of her comfort zone。Triggers: bullying, low self-esteem, toxic relationship, cheatingJaz had low self-esteem when she was with Paul。 She seemed to go along with everything he wanted, just to please him and it was nice seeing her find out what she wanted and go for it without him in the picture。Jaz was rightfully mad when she found out what her family did – especially her sister, who had a chance to stop the podcast she made about it。 Jasmine really is a sweetheart for taking time to realize why they did it (out of love for her) and forgiving them。 I don’t know if I would have been so easy to forgive that quickly。I couldn’t put this book down because it was entertaining and I related so well to Jasmine。 This is a wonderful, heartfelt coming of age story that has a sweet romance, friendship, family and food – so much amazing food that it made me hungry! So if you like food and romance, you will definitely enjoy this one。 。。。more
